Ricky Thornton Jr. opens Sunshine Nationals with fifth-place finish
Ricky Thornton Jr. returned to the driver’s seat of the Koehler Motorsports No. 20RT Late Model this past weekend as Volusia Speedway Park hosted the seventh annual Sunshine Nationals.
After securing the fourth-and-final transfer spot in his heat race, Thornton turned in his best result of the three-race slate in Thursday’s opener, charging from 13th to fifth in the 35-lap feature.
Thornton’s Friday night ended early, as he retired from the preliminary feature while navigating slick track conditions.
On Saturday, Thornton rebounded by winning his B-Main to earn a spot in the $20,000-to-win finale. He capped off the weekend with a solid performance, advancing 11 positions in the 50-lap main event to finish seventh.
