Thornton capitalizes in AFM No. 20RT at CAR
Ricky Thornton Jr.’s Late Model season roared to life over the weekend, as a guest appearance in the Adam Family Motorsports No. 20RT entry resulted in his first victory of the year in the opening round of the Rio Grande Waste Services Wild West Shootout.
Thornton returned to his home state of Arizona, competing exclusively in Saturday’s event at Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande as he balanced his schedule ahead of the Chili Bowl. Piloting the Joe Adam-owned Longhorn Chassis, Thornton topped his time trial group and went on to capture his heat race. He then outdueled Hudson O’Neal in the 50-lap feature to secure the $25,000 payday.
On Monday, Thornton shifted his focus, climbing aboard the Reinbold/Underwood Motorsports No. 19R Midget at the Tulsa (Okla.) Expo Center’s SageNet Center. One of 23 drivers invited to compete in the prestigious Race of Champions, Thornton’s night was derailed by an early spin during qualifying, which ultimately set the tone for the remainder of the event. He went onto retire on lap 18 of the 25-lap main event.
