Ricky Thornton Jr. Sweeps LOLMDS Weekend at Port Royal Speedway
Banks $60,000 in Rumble by the River Winnings
MOUNT AIRY, N.C. (08/25/25) – Port Royal Speedway has been a friendly stop for Ricky Thornton Jr. in 2025.
The reigning Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) champion added to his April Battle in the Borough victory by sweeping the Rumble by the River doubleheader this past weekend at the half-mile Pennsylvania oval known as “The Speed Palace.”
Thornton topped a thrilling duel with Chris Madden in Saturday’s 50-lap main event, steering his Ultimate Towing & Recovery / Elite Ready Mix / Coltman Farms Racing / Hoker Trucking No. 20RT Longhorn Chassis Late Model to victory lane for the $50,000 triumph.
“I just hoped I got back to him [Madden],” Thornton said. “It almost sounded like he was firing a little bit before I was [on the restarts], so he would get a little bit of a run down the hill. The first time, he didn’t slide me, and you, I thought maybe he’s not going to slide me, so on the next restart, he slid me. It was either wreck or get wrecked there.”
Thornton’s weekend began Friday with a heat race win over Garrett Alberson. From the front row of the 40-lap opener, the Chandler, Ariz., native fended off Jonathan Davenport’s late challenge to claim the preliminary victory. Apart from Davenport leading lap 30, Thornton controlled the pace throughout, leading the final 10 circuits to secure the $10,000 prize.
On Saturday, Thornton finished second in his heat to earn a sixth-place starting spot in the feature. By lap 20, he had climbed into second after overtaking Devin Moran, setting up an intense 15-lap duel with Madden. Thornton ultimately prevailed to complete the weekend sweep.
The $50,000 triumph marked his 20th win of the season and the 54th LOLMDS victory of his career.
