Pair of runner-ups in Nippy 50 at Maquoketa Speedway
After Thursday’s scheduled practice session, Ricky Thornton Jr. joined a stout field of 44 MARS Late Model Championship Series entries at Maquoketa (IA) Speedway on Friday evening for the Nippy 50 weekend.
Aboard his Hoker Trucking No. 20RT Koehler Motorsports Late Model, Thornton lost a spot in his heat but was able to regain his momentum as the night unfolded, driving 11th-to-2nd in the 40-lap opener.
On Saturday, Ricky topped the 44-car field in time trials before placing first in his heat. With the redraw placing him on the second row for the $15,000-to-win Nippy 50 finale, Thornton climbed two positions to register a runner-up finish. He joined race-winner Bobby Pierce on the podium with Brian Shirley finishing third.
