Fourth-place finish in Non-Wing Outlaw highlights Thornton's Tulsa Shootout
With the 2025 season kicking off on New Year's Eve, Ricky Thornton Jr. joined over 1000 drivers at the Tulsa (OK) Expo Center this past weekend for the 40th annual Smiley’s Racing Product Tulsa Shootout powered by NOS Energy Drink.
Slated to compete in four divisions for the event spanning Tuesday through Saturday, Thornton got off to a strong start in the Non-Wing Outlaw ranks as he picked up a win on Wednesday, however, a blown motor in his Winged A-Class entry on Wednesday night ended his evening. The Chandler, Arizona native recorded a fifth-place finish in his Winged Outlaw entry in Tuesday’s opener.
Despite an impressive alphabet soup run in the Winged Outlaw ranks on Thursday, Ricky fell short of qualifying for Saturday’s Winged Outlaw finale with a fifth-place outing in his B-Feature.
With his Winged Outlaw and Stock Non-Wing entries falling short in consolation races, Thornton’s focus shifted to the Non-Wing Outlaw division as he secured the seventh-starting position for Saturday's main event.
Seeking his first Golden Driller, Ricky raced to a solid fourth-place finish in the talent-laden field. He chased Christopher Bell, Kyle Larson, Emerson Axsom to the checkers with K.J. Snow finishing fifth.
